Huawei Closes in on Samsung's Global Smartphone Lead
01 September, 2018
Samsung is expected to keep its No. 1 spot in the global smartphone market in the third quarter this year, but its market share is expected to drop to under 20 percent as China's Huawei closes in.
Huawei overtook Apple to rank second in the previous quarter and is forecast to narrow the gap with Samsung fast.
According to data published by Taiwanese market watcher TrendForce on Wednesday, Samsung is projected to manufacture 70 million smartphones in the third quarter and hold a 19-percent market share. But that is less than in the second quarter (74.4 million smartphones), while its market share will shrink 2.1 percentage points.

Huawei's output is projected to rise five percent to 44.35 million and its market share to reach 12.5 percent. That narrows the gap with Samsung to 6.5 percentage points. TrendForce bases its forecasts on data provided by parts suppliers.
TrendForce did not expect Samsung's latest Galaxy Note 9 flagship phone to make much of a dent.
But Huawei could suffer from setbacks in the U.S. due to security concerns, though it is bolstered by stable sales of its new Honor smartphones in the U.K. and India.
