Inter coach Simone Inzaghi recalled Edin Dzeko following the weekend's Serie A action as Romelu Lukaku dropped to the bench, while Milan were boosted by the return of Rafael Leao.

Milan made the early threats as Brahim Diaz was unable to turn home a knockdown from Olivier Giroud while, before the midfielder was denied by Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana. Inter got stronger as the half went on, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan seeing more of the ball down the left flank while Denzel Dumfries also managed to get forward on the opposite flank.

There was a lively end to the first though as Rafael Leoa went close for Milan from a tight angle, while Lautaro Martinez saw his glancing header saved by goalkeer Mike Maignan at the other end.

Inter were dealt a blow just before the interval as Mkhitaryan was unable to recover from an earlier injury and was replaced by Marcelo Brozovic.

The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, but Milan were finding it tough to carve out any serious openings for most of the early stages of the stanza.

Inter went on to make two changes just after the hour mark as Dzeko and Federico Dimarco made way for Lukaku and Robin Gosens, while the Rossoneri introduced Pierre Kalulu.

Inter's changes were the ones that paid off as they opened the scoring on 74 minutes when Lukaku did well to slip in striker partner Martinez, who took one touch before firing in at Maignan's near post.

That goal was enough to get the job done for Inter, who advance to their first Champions League final since they won it under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
