iOS 12.1 will throttle iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X as they age

Last year, Apple had to face one of the most controversial year endings when the infamous performance throttling feature was discovered to bog down older iPhones. Even though Apple publicly accepted and rolled out a fix, the Cupertino giant had to face lots of lawsuits. However, Apple did indicate that it’s a feature that will be part of all future iPhones, which has brought last year’s gleaming iPhone models to suffer from the same wrath.
The iOS 12.1 update was recently released, bringing a ton of new features and several bug fixes. However, the update also brought the Performance Management for the battery to iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. The feature is enabled by default and will start throttling performance as soon as it detects a drop in consistency from the power reserve.
“This performance management feature is specific to iPhone and does not apply to any other Apple products. Starting with iOS 12.1, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X include this feature, but performance management may be less noticeable due to their more advanced hardware and software design,” reads the support page.
Despite Apple hinting at a lesser performance deterioration compared to the older models, the feature will eventually tune down the CPU’ performance to prevent the device from abruptly switching off. If you don’t care about the abrupt shutdowns, then there’s an option to switch it off from the Settings.
Apple gathered all the negative attention last year when it was found to throttle older iPhones without notifying the users anywhere. Apple suggested that users could restore the performance of their older iPhones by simply replacing the battery. On the other hand, rivals from the Android universe denied any such practice on their handsets.
