Japan had 59 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, biggest one-day rise: Report

Japan had 59 new cases of coronavirus infections on Tuesday (Mar 10), the largest one-day rise because the start of outbreak, community broadcaster NHK said.
Total infections have increased to 1,278 instances, including 696 from the Diamond Princess cruise liner and 14 returnees on charter flights from China, according to NHK data.
One different infection was reported in early stages Wednesday, in the western prefecture of Hyogo.
Japan has seen 19 deaths from the virus, including seven from the cruise liner, the general public broadcaster said.
Japan has closed schools, zoos and topic parks, and drastically scaled rear public events because the outbreak. The annual planting season sumo tournament has been placed in Osaka without spectators, departing NHK to televise bouts of wrestlers facing off within an eerily quiet stadium.
Japan's federal government on Tuesday authorized draft "state of emergency" procedures that could allow authorities to hold people inside and commandeer properties for hospitals.
Unlike neighbouring South Korea, Japan has not undertaken widespread testing and the government came under heavy fire because of its handling of the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged a crisis financial bundle to tackle the outbreak.
