Japan reports 14 additional COVID-19 cases on Italian cruise ship Costa Atlantica, acquiring total to 48
Fourteen more coronavirus infections have been verified on the Italian cruise liner Costa Atlantica docked for fixes in Japan, a local official explained on Thursday (Apr 23), taking the total to at least 48.

Half of them were cooks and the spouse were staff members responsible for serving foodstuff to the crew, the official told a livestreamed information conference.

The Costa Atlantica infections come after the cases on the Diamond Princess cruise liner in Yokohama 8 weeks ago, where more than 700 passengers and crew were found to be infected, although this time around only crew members were up to speed the Costa Atlantica.

The Costa Cruises-operated ship was taken up to a shipyard in Nagasaki city in western Japan in late February by a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries after the COVID-19 pandemic had scuttled plans for scheduled repairs in China.

The most recent cases have raised concern about the potential impact on Nagasaki residents after revelations some crew had left the restricted area despite assurances from the ship operator that they would stay within the wharf, according to Nagasaki officials.

The Italian cruise liner is having 623 crew members no passengers. Officials explained they hoped to eventually check all on board.

One employee, who had tested great for COVID-19 and have been transferred to an area hospital, was now on a significant condition and about a ventilator, the state said.

Japan has seen a lot more than 11,500 infections and near to 300 deaths from the coronavirus, excluding numbers from the Gemstone Princess.
