Japan to create coronavirus headquarters, possible step to emergency declaration
26 March, 2020
The Japanese government was getting ready to set up a particular headquarters on coronavirus as soon as Thursday (Mar 26) afternoon, a step that could set the stage for declaring circumstances of emergency over the outbreak, Kyodo news agency reported, after the capital of Tokyo saw a sharp rise in cases this week.
Under a rules revised earlier in March to covers the coronavirus, the primary minister can declare a state of emergency if the condition poses a "grave danger" to lives and if its quick spread threatens serious economic damage. The virus has recently elevated Japan's recession risk.
If a state of urgent is declared, governors in hard-hit regions would need to take actions such as for example asking people to stay home, closing schools and other people facilities and cancelling large events.
