LG Takes Another Run at Japanese Smartphone Market
10 December, 2019
LG will try its luck one more time in Japan's notoriously tough smartphone market by launching the dual-screen G8 ThinQ (G8X) there.
Ideas for innovative smartphones have more or less run out, while LG's share of Japan's smartphone market is stuck below two percent.
The last time LG launched a premium smartphone in Japan was last year with the V30 Plus, which duly tanked.
LG said Sunday that it is selling the G8X through Japanese telecom Softbank. It will start marketing it in 5,000 stores in major Japanese cities.
The G8X is only the LTE (4G) version of the V50S 5G sold in Korea, but Japan will not launch 5G services until early next year.
An LG staffer said, "We plan to roll out 5G smartphones in Japan in April next year and take on the premium smartphone market there."
