LG to Give 3,900 Temps Permanent Contracts
LG Electronics said Thursday that it will give 3,900 temporary workers at 130 service centers across the country permanent employment contracts. They will be directly employed by LG Electronics rather than a subsidiary.

"We decided that the workers needed to become permanent staff in order to offer professional service to our customers and deliver a higher level of satisfaction," an LG spokesman said. "The move is also in line with government policy to provide more high-quality jobs."

The workers will get their new employment contracts by the first half of next year after negotiations over benefits and other compensation.

LG said its labor union persistently demanded the switch. Bae Sang-ho, the head of the union, said, "We welcome the company's bold decision. The quality of customer service will improve due to the improvement in working conditions of our service engineers."

Rival Samsung already announced last April that it will offer permanent positions to 8,700 service center workers. The process was completed early this month.
