New Barca Signing Gundogan Could Leave 'For Free' Within A Week
09 August, 2023
Barcelona's new signing Ilkay Gundogan could reportedly leave the club for free by the end of the week.
According to Sport, the Blaugrana will lose their German midfielder as a free agent if he is not registered in time for the club's first LALIGA game of the season on Sunday.
The Spanish publication claims that the 32-year-old has a clause in his deal in Spain stating that if he is not documented as a Barca player by the time they play against Getafe, not only will the club lose the playmaker for nothing, but they will also have to pay him his wages of €10 million (R206 million) for the first year of his three-season contract.
The Catalan giants still find themselves in a precarious financial situation a year after pulling several economic levers, and are yet to navigate their way out of troubled waters.
However, president Joan Laporta is believed to be in the process of finalising a deal to sell a 16% stake of the club's audiovisual company Barca Studios, while the Spanish champions are also hoping to complete the sales of Franck Kessie to Al Ahli and Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain shortly.
The hope for the five-time European champions is that the aforementioned deals are completed before the new Spanish top-flight season begins so that Xavi Hernandez can have more than the current 13 players registered at his disposal, including Gundogan.
