OnePlus 6T’s highlight will be the new Screen Unlock
We have known for long that the OnePlus 6T will ditch the capacitive fingerprint sensor and go for the in-display fingerprint sensor — thanks to OnePlus conforming it in one of their interviews. OnePlus has been promising faster unlocking speeds when compared to the existing options in the market. And now, the company has given a name to their take on the in-display sensor technology — Screen Unlock.

In one of their recent blog posts, OnePlus founder Pete Lau talks about the new Screen Unlock technology on the upcoming OnePlus 6T. He goes on to say that Screen Unlock “encompasses a wide array of software processes and hardware components carefully tuned to work with the OnePlus 6T.” The company is opting for an optical fingerprint module, which houses a small lens to accurately register your fingerprint as it presses down on the cover glass. Similar to Vivo phones, the screen is used as a light source to enhance the outline of the fingerprint, enabling the sensor to accurately read its exact dimensions and shape. The fingerprint data is stored in a ‘Trust Zone’ on the Snapdragon 845 chip for maintaining data privacy.

The Screen Unlock also relies on proprietary algorithms and faster animations from OnePlus to enhance the unlocking speeds. OnePlus promises a “momentous leap forward in unlocking technology, delivering unmatched speed and convenience.”

However, the company was in the process of opting for an in-display sensor since last year’s OnePlus 5T. At the time, Lau says that they were working on the first generation sensor that was too slow for the company’s requirements and was struggling in the recognition rate. Therefore, they kept on working on both the hardware and the software until it was easy to live with on a daily basis.

The addition of the optical in-display sensor has caused OnePlus to omit the 3.5mm headphone jack form the smartphone and rely on the USB-C port for both music as well as charging. OnePlus is expected to unveil the 6T on 17th October and prices are speculated to start around the Rs 40,000 mark.
