'Pogba Was Player Of The Tournament Before France's Exit'
06 July, 2021
Paul Pogba was the Player of the Tournament at the UEFA European Championship before France's exit, according to Wayne Rooney.
The Manchester United star was a standout in the French side with some eye-catching performances, including one that earned him a Man of the Match award.
One of those dazzling displays came in Les Bleus' defeat to Switzerland in the round 16, during which he also managed to score a superb goal from distance.
Rooney, who played with Pogba at United, believes the Frenchman's passing at the tournament was "incredible", and feels a change of position was key.
"Like a lot of people, I fancied the French to be champions, and as a team they were a massive disappointment," Rooney wrote in a column for the Sunday Times.
"That was a particular shame for Paul Pogba. He had been the player of the tournament until they went out. The passes (he) played for Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe were incredible.
"It helped him to have N'Golo Kante as his midfield partner but I think the biggest reason that Paul's performances were so good was his positioning.
"He was playing deeper than we normally see him for Manchester United and this meant that he was able to pick the ball up in areas of the pitch where he had the time and room to pick a pass."
