Prices of Rice, Derivative Products Surge Sharply

The cost of rice has increased sharply for six consecutive months.
Which has pushed up the prices of several products that are produced from the staple, including selected alcoholic beverages.
Statistics Korea said on Thursday the rice price was up 14 percent on-year. The cost of makgeolli, or traditional Korean rice wine, rose practically 15 percent, the biggest hike in more than 22 years.

Rice cakes increased by 4.7 percent and instant rice by 3.2 percent.
The purchase price rises are mostly because of last year's long monsoon season and a number of typhoons that hurt the harvest.
