Sir David Attenborough named people’s advocate for the planet
Natural historian Sir David Attenborough has been named a climate change champion ahead of the Cop 26 summit.

Attenborough will address world leaders as a "people’s advocate" at the Cop 26 talks being held in Glasgow in November.

With six months to go prior to the key climate talks, the broadcaster will submit the case when planning on taking climate action.

“I am greatly honoured to be given the role of people’s advocate," Attenborough said.

"There could not be a more important moment that people must have international agreement.

“The epidemic has proven us how crucial it is to find agreement among nations if we are to solve such worldwide problems, however the issues that await us next five to a decade are even greater.

"It is crucial these meetings in Glasgow, Cop26, be successful, and that finally the nations will come together to fix the crippling issues that the world now faces.”

He previously described Cop26 as possibly “our last possibility to make the required step-change” towards protecting the planet.

Attenborough will address world leaders at major international events over another six months, like the G7 Summit in Cornwall in June.

The goal is to push climate and the protection of nature to the most notable of the global agenda.

Within its environmental efforts, the UK is purchasing a green recovery that creates sustainable jobs and addresses the urgent and linked challenges of public health, climate change and lack of biodiversity.

“Sir David Attenborough has recently inspired millions of people in the UK and around the world along with his passion and knowledge to act on climate change and protect the earth for future generations,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

“There is no better person to build momentum for further change as we approach the Cop26 climate summit in November.

"I am hugely grateful to Sir David for agreeing to be our people’s advocate.”

This season, Britain announced at the climate change leaders’ summit, hosted by US President Joe Biden, that it planned more ambitious cuts in carbon emissions.

"Climate change is the foremost threat facing humanity and the stakes cannot be higher for our world," Cop26 President Alok Sharma said.

“The next decade will be make, or break, for cutting global emissions sufficiently to avoid the worst ramifications of climate change.

"This is why I am delighted to be dealing with Sir David, a hero for our country and our planet, to inspire action before Cop26."
