Sleep Number is jumping into AI with its new smart mattress
Artificial intelligence is making its way into the mattress business through new technology that promises to monitor sleep patterns and biometrics, and then adjusts to deliver what sleepers need.

Vertical sleep player Sleep Number Corp. has unveiled its new lineup of smart mattresses that monitor and adapt to a sleeper’s needs via artificial intelligence. In addition, the company’s new furniture collection includes a bed that offers wake-up lighting, built-in speakers, reading lights and storage for remotes and other electronics and syncs with new lineup of smart mattresses that monitor and adapt to a sleeper’s needs via artificial intelligence.

The next-generation smart mattress incorporates embedded sensors and artificial intelligence to learn a sleeper’s biometrics and sleep patterns. Sleep Number said the mattress automatically adjusts with changing needs whether pregnant, recovering from an injury or aging. The adjustments require no action by the user.

The mattress offers a new step for the company in that touts health, wellness and overall improved sleep through its marketing and product development. The new mattress is designed to monitor health data like average heart rate, breathing rate and motion, as well as sleep trends. All are shared through the company’s app to give the user an understanding of their sleep patterns.

In addition to the enhanced tracking system, the company has added a breathable layer to help detract heat and regulate temperature. Using a connected health platform that combines new embedded software capabilities, AI and machine-learning algorithms, along with new chip technology, Sleep Number said the smart mattresses may be able to zero in on abnormal events and alert sleepers to pattern changes. Future updates, the company said, could help detect illness like sleep apnea, insomnia or cardiac events.

“Our mission to improve lives by individualizing sleep experiences is fully realized with next gen smart beds,” said Shelly Ibach, chair, president and CEO. “Sleep Number was founded on individuality: Science tells us no two people are alike, and no two nights’ sleep are the same. We are setting the precedent that what you sleep on is vitally important, and beds should evolve with a sleeper’s changing life and health needs. We’re proud to build upon our legacy of award-winning wellness technologies and make next level sleep more attainable for every sleeper, during every life stage.”

The launch of the smart mattress coincides with the company’s introduction of its Lifestyle Furniture, which is designed to work with Sleep Number’s mattresses and adjustable bed bases, but the company said it can also pair with other mattresses and bases in the marketplace.

Designed so that users can program the bed to meet their sleep schedules and preferences, the fully upholstered platform bed – available in leather or fabric – features a remote that allows for programming of lighting for winding down and waking and for setting ambient noise. The lights – both on the back of the headboard and incorporated into the front sides of the bed – are adjustable in color and intensity. The company also developed detachable hand rails and an optional attachable table for holding tablets, books or other items.

“The next gen Sleep Number smart bed is the only science-backed, fully adjustable and effortless smart bed that uses physical and digital experiences designed to improve sleep quality for each sleeper,” said Annie Bloomquist, executive vice president and chief innovation officer. “Our advanced sensing capabilities, which deliver highly accurate data nightly, help provide a more holistic picture of sleep and health.

“In the future, because of the smart bed’s advanced analytics, we intend to connect sleep data with health care providers for monitoring, diagnoses and potential interventions in a way that occurs easily and reliably. The future of Sleep Number delivers real-time, connected sleep health and wellness solutions.”
