Smaller SUV Boom Continues
18 May, 2020
Compact and other small SUV are enjoying a boom in the domestic auto market.
Korea's five carmakers sold a combined 72,416 smaller SUVs and 52,303 midsize SUVs through the first four months of this year, outpacing sales of traditionally-favored sedans which stood at 65,107.
Compact SUVs now take into account 15.5 percent of the country's total passenger car sales.
SUVs have significantly more loading and leg space space than comparable sedans at a lower price and looks impressively big and very important to the status-conscious.
The seat is greater than a sedan's, so it helps even nervous drivers get an overview of the road. One drawback is that it could supply the driver a false sense of security and strength and encourage bad behavior from some reckless motorists.
Smaller SUVs are particularly popular as a first car for ladies in their 20s and 30s or another car for families who feel they could 1 day head outdoors.
Kia sold 18,009 Seltos, while Hyundai sold 12,588 Konas and Renault 11,914 XM3s.
The SUV market was first opened up here by Ssangyong's Tivoli in 2015. Since that time, it has grown rapidly as other carmakers have released a number of smaller SUVs. Last year 184, 274 smaller SUVs were sold.
There are currently twelve Korean compact and subcompact SUV models, exactly like the amount of other SUV models.
