South Korea reports 1,030 new COVID-19 cases, second daily record
13 December, 2020
South Korea reported 1,030 new coronavirus infections on Sunday (Dec 13), the second daily record in a good row as a region that had initial achievement controlling COVID-19 today battles a good harsh third wave.
Of the brand new cases, 1,002 were locally transmitted, some 786 of which were uncovered in the higher Seoul area -- home to half the country's 52 million people.
It brings the total to 42,766 infections with 580 deaths, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Firm said.
The weekend numbers followed several days in which authorities reported figures which range from about 500 to 600.
Primary Minister Chung Sye-kyun on Saturday said even more tightening social distancing restriction to the nation's highest level will be unavoidable if the spread continues, which will be practically a good lockdown for the first time in Asia's fourth-largest economy.
The stricter restrictions include a ban on gatherings greater than 50 persons and spectators at sports events. Cafes can serve simply takeaways, while restaurants must close by 9 pm, with simply deliveries permitted afterwards.
On Saturday, Southern Korea reported 950 different infections, prompting President Moon Jae-in to order the mobilisation of police, military personnel and public medical doctors to block the pass on, which he called an "emergency."
Greater Seoul is under level 2.5 restrictions. Raising that to 3, the highest of the five amounts, would require academic institutions to switch to remote learning, allow only essential staff in offices and ban gatherings greater than 10 people.
