Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover are likely to star in a reboot of 2005 film Mr and Mrs Smith.
The initial movie, about two wedded assassins who are ordered to kill each other, starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - and led to the actors forming a real-life relationship.
It will now get remade as a series on Amazon Primary, and released next time.
Fleabag superstar Waller-Bridge and Atlanta actor Glover may also be executive manufacturers on the show.
"Discuss the dream staff!" Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said. "Donald and Phoebe happen to be two of the very most skilled creators and performers on earth.
"It's a classic dream for us, since it will come to be for our global audience, to have both of these forces of character collaborating as a powerhouse imaginative team."
Both Waller-Bridge and Glover are multi-award-winning actors and writers - Waller-Bridge for the BBC Three series Fleabag in particular, and Glover for his TV comedy-drama Atlanta. Glover in addition has earned multiple music awards for his performances under his musical stage name, Childish Gambino.
When it had been released, the initial Mr and Mrs Smith had mixed testimonials. While the Washington Post named it "a kicky, twisted thrill ride", San Francisco Chronicle critic Mick LaSalle named it "glossy, but awful".
