Official: Chelsea Sign World Cup Winner, Break English Transfer Record
Big spenders Chelsea have broken the bank to sign a 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, beating the previous transfer record for the most expensive signing in Premier League history.

Following a weeks-long chase for his signature, the Blues have signed Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in a deal worth €121 million (R2.2 billion), as confirmed by the Portuguese giants.

The 22-year-old had been a target of Chelsea's since his exploits for the Albiceleste at the World Cup in Qatar, interest that caused him to go AWOL after arriving back for duty with Benfica. As a result of his behaviour, the Portuguese club disciplined the talented midfielder before reintroducing him to the squad, but were ultimately unable to hang on to him for the remainder of the season.

Fernandez is believed to have become the most expensive signing in English top-flight history, a record previously held by Manchester City's Jack Grealish.

The ex-River Plate starlet is the eighth new arrival at Stamford Bridge in this window.
