Official: Man Utd Sign Striker To Replace Ronaldo
14 January, 2023
Manchester United have officially announced the signing of a striker, who has been brought in as Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement.
The Red Devils have confirmed the arrival of 30-year-old Netherlands international Wout Weghorst from Burnley after complicated discussions involving Turkish club Besiktas.
For a deal to materialise, United had to pay a compensation fee to Besiktas, where Weghorst had been on loan for the first half of the season. The towering forward joined Burnley following a successful three-and-a-half-year spell at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, but struggled as he managed to score just twice in 20 matches in England.
He did, however, impress for the Dutch at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, especially in a second-half cameo against Argentina at the quarter-final stage, scoring twice to send the match to extra-time.
Weghorst joins United's attacking contingent following the free-agent departure of Ronaldo, whose contract at the 20-time English champions was mutually terminated in November following his controversial interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan.
