Los Blancos looked lively in the early stages of the first half, with Eder Militao and Rodrygo squandering chances in the opening 10 minutes.

Valencia had to wait until the 19th minute for their first chance of the game as Jose Gaya did well to pick out Edinson Cavani, who saw his header saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Carlo Ancelotti's charges continued to dominate and went close to breaking the deadlock on 35 minutes through Karim Benzema, who fired inches wide of the upright. Four minutes later, Madrid were awarded a penalty for Eray Comert's foul on Benzema, who stepped up and calmly slotted home for the opening 12 yards. Valencia came out firing in the second half and got their reward shortly after the break, as Samuel Lino turned home Toni Lato's cross in the box.

Ancelotti looked to his bench to improve his side's chances of getting back in front although it was in defence, with Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy replacing Militao and Lucas Vazquez.

Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages of the second half, but neither were successful and another 30 minutes of action was need to decided the tie.

Toni Kroos nearly got the reward for Real just before the interval in extra-time, but the German's powerful strike was tipped away by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The would end up going to penalties, where Los Blancos held their nerve to triumph 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out to secure their spot in Sunday's final.
