End of the Series for Hyundai's Sonata Sedan?
09 March, 2021
Hyundai has halted creation at its plant in Asan, which has been making the ubiquitous mid-sized Sonata sedan for twenty years.
Hyundai said the stoppage in the plant can last from Mon to Friday to clear inventory left over because of poor revenue. It said the goal is to ensure "adaptable production and offer according to advertise demand."
The Asan plant also manufactures the large Grandeur sedan. A Hyundai staffer explained, "Poor revenue of the Sonata prompted us to roll out extra Grandeurs, which has resulted in rising inventory."
The Sonata was typically the most popular car in Korea from 2000 to 2010 but ceded its position to the Gandeur in 2017, and this past year sales plunged 32.6 percent, even below affiliate Kia's mid-sized K5 sedan.
One sector insider said, "Soaring incomes mean Koreans favor greater and even more luxurious cars, and the Grandeur has established itself while the standard car for the middle class. The K5 managed to attract younger buyers using its sleek design, however the Sonata didn't."
