City manager Pep Guardiola made just one change from the 4-4 draw with Chelsea, as Nathan Ake came in for Josko Gvardiol at the left-back spot, while Jurgen Klopp recalled Alexis MacAllister and Curtis Jones.

The Citizens were nearly gifted the opening goal on ten minutes when goalkeeper Alisson Becker sent his clearance straight at Phil Foden, however the Brazilian redeemed himself by saving the midfielder's shot. The Reds went close five minutes later as Salah found some space on the right before picking out Darwin Nunez, who saw his header brilliantly tipped away by City goalkeeper Ederson.

City's dominance paid off nit he 27th minute when Ake skipped past two challenges before playing in Erling Haaland, who took a couple touches before firing past Alisson to bring up his 50th Premier League in 48 appearances, faster than any player ever.

While the visitors struggled to carve out chances, City nearly added a second goal just before the break but Alisson produced a finger-tip save to push Foden's effort onto the upright.

Klopp eventually looked to his bench shortly after the break as Jones and the injured Diogo Jota made way for Luis Diaz and Ryan Gravenberch to improve their attack.

Ederson came to the defending champions' rescue with 20 minutes to go, with the Brazilian shot-stopper producing a superb save at his near post to keep out Nunez's first-time strike after some good work by Salah.

However, Ederson was breached with ten minutes to go when Trent Alexander-Arnold collected a pass from Mohamed Salah before drilling the ball into the far corner for his first league goal of the campaign.

Guardiola's men pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, but Klopp's charges remain resolute at the back to hold on for the point.
