Automaker Hyundai will create a hydrogen fuel cell devices plant in Guangzhou in the Chinese province of Guangdong this season.

It'll be Hyundai's first hydrogen fuel cell plant overseas.

The carmaker hopes to get a springboard into in the Chinese hydrogen car market with the move.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Strength here authorized the export of Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell technology though it is classified as "core technology" that must definitely be protected from copycats and pirates.

Once completed, the plant could have an annual production potential of just a handful of thousand cells, when compared to Hyundai Mobis' plant found in Ulsan that may produce 23,000 products. Hyundai plans to produce core components below and assemble them in Guangzhou.

"No enterprise in China provides core hydrogen fuel cell technology," an industry insider said. "Hyundai made a decision quickly to build its plant in Guangzhou to utilize the neighborhood government there which has the authority to hand out subsidies."

It costs additional money to create hydrogen vehicles than electric cars and build hydrogen fueling stations, therefore the cooperation of the Chinese federal government is crucial.
