Lights, camera, glamour: 40 of the best looks from the Cannes Film Festival red carpet

The 73rd twelve-monthly Cannes Film Festival was designed to happen between Tuesday, May 12 and Saturday, May 23 this season, but like a lot of things amid the coronavirus pandemic, it was cancelled some weeks hence.
That is a loss to people, because not only may be the festival a tribute to the world's best filmmaking, but it's a visual feast, too, as famous actors and actresses take to the red carpet, clad in the world's most beautiful clothes.
Using its daily parades for the cameras, Cannes, since it is simply known, has helped boost many careers since the 1950s, when actress Brigitte Bardot wore a LBD and danced along the beach for the press.
Since then, the Cannes red carpet is becoming increasingly elaborate, as stars ask stylists to secure the most recent fashion masterpieces, often fresh off the runway.
Although we will not be aware of the red carpet scenes this season, here, we look back at a number of the showstopper looks from the past, from Princess Diana to Amal Clooney, via Aishwarya Rai and Kristen Stewart.
There are fairy tale gowns, tailored trouser suits and a lot of sartorial rule-breaking, including a barefoot Julia Roberts.
