Erik ten Hag made the bold call to leave Ronaldo and Harry Maguire on the bench, as Anthony Elanga, Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane got their first starts for the season.
For the visitors, Harvey Elliot started in midfield with Jordan Henderson and James Milner while Joe Gomez came in for Nathan Philipps in central defence. Elanga's inclusion nearly paid off after nine minutes when he was played through on goal by Bruno Fernandes' clever pass, but the Swedish striker hit the upright with only Alisson Becker to beat.
Elanga made amends seven minutes later when he combined with Fernandes before picking out Jadon Sancho, who showed great composure to drop James Milner before slotting into the far corner.
Liverpool, meanwhile, had to wait until the 29th minute for their first sight at goal as Mohamed Salah's cross found Jordan Henderson, who was unable to steer his volley on target in the box.
United nearly gifted the Reds an equaliser just before the halftime break when Fernandes' wild clearance was saved by Lisandro Martinez on the goal-line.
Ten Hag opted to introduce Anthony Martial after the break and his impact was immediate as the Frenchman played Rashford through on goal and the English striker slotted home his first goal of the season.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp responded by withdrawing Henderson for Fabinho, who went close to pulling a goal back in the 66th minute with a header that forced David de Gea into a save at the near post.
However, Liverpool did set up a nervy final 10 minutes when Salah headed past De Gea for his second goal of the season and his 10th against United overall.
Despite a late push from the visitors, United held out until the final whistle to hand Ten Hag his first official win since taking over.
