Odegaard brace allows Arsenal to extend gap over Manchester City
13 November, 2022
Arsenal head into the World Cup break on a high as their 2-0 win over Wolverhampton means they now sit five points clear of Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta's men were buoyed by City's shock 2-1 defeat to Brentford earlier in the day, and Martin Odegaard's brace proved the difference against Wolves at Molineux.
After an opening 45 minutes that saw neither side able to break the deadlock, Arsenal needed just 10 minutes to open the scoring after play resumed. Fabio Vieira, who came on for Granit Xhaka after 16 minutes, ran onto a Gabriel Jesus pass before catching Jose Sa off guard with a chipped ball across the face of goal that Odegaard simply had to tap home.
With Wolves offering little in attack, the Norwegian doubled his tally in the 75th minute, all but ending the contest.
Oleksandr Zinchenko drove to the byline and fired a cutback that reached Gabriel Martinelli. While Sa was able to block the Brazilian's shot, he wasn't able to stop Odegaard from firing home the rebound.
The result means Arsenal will top the Premier League standings on Christmas for the first time since 2007/08.
