Real Madrid were crowned winners of the Supercopa de Espana with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening.

Los Blancos installed three new additions from the win after extra-time against FC Barcelona in the semi-finals through Lucas Vazquez, David Alaba and Rodrygo.

An electrifying start from Madrid looked destined 19 minutes from the start after Rodrygo squared a ball to Karim Benzema, who reduced Unai Simon to a finger-tip save off a swerving attempt.

Bilbao were on the back-foot again after nine minutes when a corner-kick from Toni Kroos saw Carlos Casemiro work Simon to a thumping save off a powering header.

The LaLiga leaders hit the front seven minutes to halftime after Luka Modric executed a first-time finish from Rodrygo’s cutback beyond the grasp of Simon. Bilbao came very close to level it up in the last minute of the half from a smart attempt near the area by Oihan Sancet off Dani Garcia’s delivery, but the effort fizzled over the top. The positive spell at the end of the first half didn’t stop Bilbao making a change at the restart, which saw Nico Williams introduced and Alex Berenguer removed.

Madrid added a second from the penalty-spot 50 minutes in when Benzema beat Simon with a powerful strike as the pitch-side monitor showed that Yeray Alvarez handled in the area.

Los Blancos began to sit deep for a brief spell and with that allowed Bilbao a look in from a volley in the area by Williams and a snap shot from Raul Garcia quickly thereafter.

Marcelino’s men got a chance to add their name on the score-board in the last three minutes after Eder Militao gave away a penalty and got a straight red card, but Raul Garcia missed as Los Blancos held on for the clean sheet and the Super Cup title.
