Manchester United resumed action after 16 days but were unable to secure maximum points at Newcastle United on Monday night.
Premier League
Result: Newcastle United 1-1 Manchester United
Date: 27 December 2021
Venue: St James' Park
Raphael Varane was named in the starting line-up for the first time since November while Mason Greenwood replaced Jadon Sancho, who dropped to the bench.
The Magpies got off to the perfect start through Allan Saint-Maximin who collected a pass from Matty Longstaff before curling one into the far corner from the edge of the box.
With United struggling to carve out chances, Newcastle went close to pulling two goals ahead on 22 minutes but Jonjo Shelvey saw his powerful strike turned away by David de Gea.
After Callum Wilson had a goal disallowed for offside, Greenwood went close to getting the equaliser at the other as he was denied by Matt Dubravka after a smart free-kick by Bruno Fernandes.
Rangnick responded with a double change at the start of the second half as Edinson Cavani and Sancho replaced Greenwood and Fred as they looked to embark on another comeback.
De Gea had to be at his best after the break as he did well to keep out Saint-Maximin's close-range effort, befor he was well-positioned to deal with Ryan Fraser's stinging effort in the box
Newcastle were made to pay for those earlier misses, as Cavani pulled the Red Devils level in the 70th minute with a close-range finish for his second league goal of the campaign.
The hosts went agonisingly close to restoring their lead on 88 minutes when Jacob Murphy saw his curling effort crash against the upright, before De Gea denied Miguel Almiron with a stunning save moments later.
That proved to be final clear-cut opening of the encounter, as the Red Devils had to settle for a point which leaves them seven points adrift of the top four.
