Venue: Old Trafford
Edinson Cavani missed out for United due to illness while Fred, Victor Lindelof and Mason Greenwood returned, with Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba dropping out.
The Red Devils got off to the worst possible start when Eric Bailly knocked the ball into his own net after seven minutes when trying to clear Joao Cancelo's cross.
After a very slow start, United registered their first chance on 26 minutes as Luke Shaw's cross found Ronaldo who saw his volley turned away by Ederson while Mason Greenwood fired wide from the rebound.
It was one-way traffic in the first half and United had David de Gea to thank for keeping them in tie as shot-stopper produced some fine saves to keep Gabriel Jesus and Cancelo.
However, De Gea had to pick the ball out of his net on the stroke of halftime when the defence's failure to deal with Cancelo's allowed Silva to sneak in at the far post and double City's lead.
Solskjaer responded with a change at the start of the second half as Greenwood made way for Jadon Sancho as the visitors looked to get themselves back in the tie.
However, there was no immediate change in approach for the Red Devils as they struggled to carve out clear-cut openings as City goalkeeper Ederson barely had a save to make.
Phil Foden went close to adding a third goal for City in the 81st minute after seeing his low strike crash against the upright with De Gea well beaten.
In the end, the two-first half were enough to get the job done for Guardiola's charges while United lose their second straight home game in the lead.
