Samsung Named World's Most Innovative Company for 5th Straight Year
18 December, 2019
Samsung has been named the world's most innovative company for the fifth consecutive year.
The tech giant topped the annual Innovation Ranking, which selects the top 100 global digital innovation leaders, by Germany-based patent analytics provider PatentSight, edging out runner-up Johnson & Johnson.
LG came third, followed by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, which slid a notch from last year. Qualcomm, Ford, Intel and Microsoft were also included in the top 10. Apple came 14th.
Rather than simply compare the number of patents each company possesses, the ranking "focuses on patent portfolios from a qualitative perspective," measuring the "technological relevance" of patents and their "disruptive potential." Samsung ranked second in the inaugural ranking in 2010 and came out on top in 2015. It has remained at the top ever since.
Samsung currently holds about 135,000 patents. According to a report released early this year, it is now the world's leading holder of patents related to 5G technologies. It is also increasing the number of patents it holds for self-driving technologies and artificial intelligence.
