'The Sooner CR7 Leaves, The Better!'
26 August, 2021
With Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly unhappy at Juventus and desperate to leave, one of the club's former presidents has made the stunning claim that signing the ex-Real Madrid superstar was a huge error.
In recent days, the 36-year-old Portugal captain has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bianconeri, whom he joined three years ago from Los Blancos for a club-record transfer fee.
Speaking in a recent interview, ex-Juve president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli suggested that the Old Lady would be better off without the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
"I've always been honest: signing Ronaldo was a mistake. It's impossible to recoup the investment and it will remain that way," he told SerieANews.
"He's a great player, but I have to be honest – the sooner he leaves, the better for him and for Juventus.
"I hope that Massimiliano Allegri knows how to continue using him like he did against Udinese. That is, with intelligence and when the game is in progress.
"Ronaldo hampers Juventus' attack. Without him, they can do excellent things in collective terms."
The Manchester City-linked forward has scored a remarkable 101 goals in 134 matches since his arrival at Juve in 2018, but is largely judged, perhaps unfairly, on his impact in European games.
It has been reported that Ronaldo is pushing for a move to Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions, although Paris Saint-Germain have also emerged as a potential destination for the forward.
