'Torbaaz': Sanjay Dutt's cricketing drama finally ready to pitch on to screens
It's been waiting in the wings for quite some time, but Torbaaz is finally prepared to step in to the spotlight.

The film, starring veteran Indian actor Sanjay Dutt, will be unveiled on Netflix on Fri, December 11, four years following the project was initially announced.

The film revolves around Dutt, who plays an army officer struggling to forget his tragic past while trying to rehabilitate small children through cricket at refugee camps in war-torn Afghanistan.

It is a idea that former Pakistani cricketer Rameez Raja shared with Torbaaz director Girish Malik, with the surge of Afghanistan's cricket crew on the world map striking a chord internationally.

Rahul Mittra, the film's producer, told The National the film have been planned for a Netflix release prior to the pandemic hit.

"When Girish Malik found me, we decided to moot the project in principle, towards the finish of 2016. It took two years to help make the film, which is regular," Mittra says.

"When I saw the initially cut found in February this season, the marketing mind in me said, 'this film can do well on Netflix granted its subject'."

The producer also plays the role of a colonel in the Afghan army in the film, something he says had not been planned. Mittra has produced cameo appearances in a few of his past films, including the Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster trilogy. "I even did a look ensure that you auditioned along with others," Mittra says.

Torbaaz marks the first Dutt film released since the actor, 61, revealed he previously been identified as having, and since overcome, lung cancer.

"I am truly grateful for all your take pleasure in and support that I have received over the past couple of months, and I am happy to be time for the display screen with this powerful film," Dutt said in a previous statement.

Mittra said Dutt was first recovered and back Mumbai after spending time with his family in Dubai.

While the film is defined in Afghanistan, shooting also took place in Kyrgyzstan, an event that the maker reveals was challenging yet fulfilling.

"There is no set-up or precedent," says Mittra, adding Torbaaz was the initial Indian creation to shoot found in the country.

"We'd to build from scratch, also lug our equipment all the way. But we acquired what we wished, which is significant."
