UAE’s telecoms regulator adopts a new identity
13 April, 2021
The UAE Telecommunications and Digital Federal government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has rebranded, the entity announced on Mon.
Its new identity comes after a decree in September this past year which changed the authority's name, reflecting its broader remit. The authority's board voted to adopt the new name at a board conference in December.
“We happen to be witnessing a complete digital transformation … electronic authorities was started before 2000, mobile government was started in 2013 now we are talking about an electronic government supported by data and [the] Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TDRA’s director standard, told an over the internet roundtable on Monday.
“Digital government is going to be a totally different concept, as it goes beyond providing solutions. It seeks to enhance the quality of life … use digital data and technologies supported by artificial intelligence in people's transactions, romantic relationships and lives,” explained Mr Al Mansoori.
Using telecoms and digital providers in the UAE and around the world soared in the last year as corporations increasingly switched to remote control attempting to stem the spread of the pandemic. The Emirates also temporarily lifted a ban on voice-over-internet protocol applications and additional video conferencing tools to greatly help remote working.
“We think that digitally, interact digitally, design digitally, job digitally and present our goods digitally. This becomes an integral part of the daily life of individuals in the federal government or in the individual sector because they are working considerably more remotely as a result of pandemic,” Mr Al Mansoori added.
The full total number of internet subscriptions in the UAE totalled almost 3 million in December, almost the same as in November, in line with the TDRA. There have been almost 33 broadband online connections per 100 residents in the Emirates, it added.
The TDRA said its strategy has been aligned with the country's digital transformation, and that it has set six new objectives that "try to create a strong infrastructure to hook up government agencies towards providing top quality digital services”, Mohammad Al Zarooni, leader of policies and programmes, said.
The TDRA, which regulates the UAE’s telecom sector and provides frameworks to government entities in neuro-scientific smart transformation, can be monitoring the impact of its changes on users and collecting feedback to boost services.
“We will be closely monitoring how our most recent initiatives are transforming users' knowledge,” Mr Al Zarooni said.
