10 UCL Records Messi & Ronaldo Have Not Yet Broken
16 April, 2020
Having dominated European football for the better part of ten years, it will come as no real surprise that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo share a host of records between them, but UEFA have finally released a set of Champions League records not yet broken by the legendary duo.
One such record may be the competition's all-time appearance milestone, which is currently held by former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who made 181 appearances with Los Blancos and Porto, excluding qualifying matches. Ronaldo is merely eight appearances behind his former teammate while Messi trails with 141 appearances to his name.
Both players also still involve some catching up to accomplish - at least in terms of age - if they're to beat Francesco Totti's record to be the Champions League's oldest goalscorer. The legendary AS Roma forward set the record in 2014, when he scored against CSKA Moscow at age 38 years and 59 days.
Despite boasting a combined 242 UCL goals between them, neither Messi nor Ronaldo have already been able to beat Roy Makaay's strike to claim the competition's most effective goal. The former Bayern Munich striker netted after just 10.12 seconds in the Bavarians' come across against Real Madrid in 2007.
