Visiting boss Carlo Ancelotti went with three changes from the Champions League quarter-final second-leg against Chelsea in midweek, as Eduardo Camavinga, Eder Militao and Lucaas Vazquez came into the back four over Nacho, Ferland Mendy and Casemiro.
Sevilla were more than holding their own in the opening quarter of an hour and opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Luka Modric gave away the free-kick after bringing down Gomez. Ivan Rakitic stepped up and cleverly sent the ball through the wall and into the back of the net. Soon after, Real were 2-0 down courtesy of their own poor defending. Acuna flicked the ball on to release Jesus Corona, who got to the ball ahead of the onrushing Thibaut Courtois and squared to Lamela, who had a simple tap-in to complete.
Anthony Martial was forced to make way five minutes before half-time because of an injury and was replaced by Rafael Mir.
Real came out of the tunnel a side looking hungry to get themselves back into the game. Two minutes after the resumption, Modric picked out Karim Benzema, who fired towards the bottom right corner but Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou closed the angle down quickly and made a brilliant save.
The deficit was cut in half just moments later. Vinicius Junior and Dani Carvajal combined down the left before the latter squared into the box for Rodrygo to hammer emphatically into the roof of the net.
Los Blancos continued their much-improved second-half performance and levelled the scores in the 82nd minute. Sevilla failed to deal with a corner and the ball ended up with Carvajal on the right of the box, who cut it back to Nacho and the defender buried a first-time shot into the back of the net.
Real were looking likely to grab the winner and did so in dramatic fashion in the second minute of stoppage time. Excellent work down the right by Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo ended with the latter dragging the ball back for Benzema, who composed himself before smashing the ball past Bounou and into the back of the net to complete a dramatic turnaround.
