CES 2018: From 8K Resolution To 146-Inch Wide Panels, Here Are 5 Jaw-Dropping Displays From CES

09 January, 2018

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show smart televisions and bigger and better displays are the name of the game. A number of big name brands had their own recipes to spice things up on Day 1, and we've brought together some of our favourites.

These screens and displays literally made our jaws drop...

LG 34-inch 5K ultrawide Thunderbolt 3 HDR P3

This ultrawide monitor from LG aspires to be the last display you’ll ever need, at least this year. Massive surface area aside, it features a single Thunderbolt 3 cable port, 21:9 aspect ratio, HDR, and over 11 million pixels. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know how ungodly expensive it’s going to be.

Samsung ‘The Wall’ is 146 inches wide

Samsung decided to go all out and supersize their smart TV. Called ‘The Wall’ it’s a massive display measuring in at 146 inches with 4K resolution. In addition, it uses MicroLED technology, similar to LED TVs meaning each microscopic LED has its own light source and doesn’t need a separate back light. Thanks to that, you get some truly deep blacks, and cool bezel-less design.

NVIDIA Big Format Gaming Display

These displays from NVIDIA will be manufactured by the likes of Acer, Asus, and HP, with 4K and HDR support. Aimed at gamers, they come with G-Sync technology, which matches the refresh rate to that of your computer’s processor for the ultimate gaming experience, all the way up to 120 Hz. They also have integrated Google Assistant, and support for streaming from NVIDIA’s Shield game console.

Samsung Q9S 85-inch 8K

Samsung is calling this smart TV the first 8K television with artificial intelligence. Of course, there’s no 8K content available for people to even watch yet so what’s the big deal? Well, it turns out that’s what the AI is for. The Q9S can supposedly intelligently upscale the resolution of whatever you’re watching to 8K. We don’t yet know how, or even how authentic the result looks, but man does that sound cool.

LG rollable display

Last but not least is by far the coolest display this year. It’s just a plain old 64-inch OLED display with 4K, except that you can pick it up off the wall and roll it up! LG had first demonstrated this prototype in an 18-inch format about two years ago, but now it looks like the finished product is coming together. Ignore the fact that the only time you’d actually want to roll up your TV would be to transport it more easily, but who wouldn’t show off that kind of device at every party?
