Former Liverpool Superstar Blames Goalkeeper For UCL Exit
15 March, 2020
While Jurgen Klopp refused at fault Adrian for Liverpool's UEFA Champions Group exit, a former Reds superstar feels the blame will lies with the goalkeeper.
The Reds were leading 2-0 in extra-time and 2-1 on aggregate before Adrian's error led to Marcos Llorente's first target.
The Spanish shot-stopper in addition has been criticised for his position on Llorente's second goal mins soon after and former Reds defender Steve Nicol feels the Premier League leaders could have progressed had Adrian not committed the errors.
“Are you aware what? If anybody ever questions why you may spend £65 million on a goalkeeper, you just saw it," Nicol told ESPN.
“Liverpool were 2-0 up found in the tie in extra-period. They’re through, if indeed they don’t lose an objective, they’re through.
“Thus yes, they could possess finished it off earlier, but the fact is they lost the overall game because of the goalie.
“They’re through at 2-0, we continue back to a similar thing, they’re through at 2-0.
“Without the goalkeeper giving the earliest goal away, Liverpool go through.
“Atletico Madrid, apart from the primary minute of the game, never looked like scoring, never got near to the target, absolutely nowhere near it, complete and utter dominance, complete and utter total control [but] because one guy then gets involved and causes chaos of it, that’s why they’re out.
“You cannot consider it any other way. We can complain about missed chances - the truth is these were through with a tidy sheet and the goalkeeper for the next time in three years provides blown it for them.”
