Liverpool Boost Top-Four Push With Merseyside Derby Win
Liverpool ended their four-game winless run in the Premier League with 2-0 victory over cross-town rivals Everton on Monday night.

Jurgen Klopp recalled Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in midfield, with Thiago Alcantara missing out through injury. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino were fit enough to make the bench.

The Reds enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages but had to wait until the 17th minute for a chance when Cody Gakpo nodded wide after Darwin Nunez's acrobatic effort. Everton nearly silenced the home crowd on 35 minutes when James Tarkowsi rose above his marker and sent a powerful header against the upright. Just seconds after Tarkowski's effort, the Reds broke on the counter which ended with Mohamed Salah volleying home the opening goal from Nunez's through-ball.

The lead was doubled four minutes after the break as another swift counter-attack ended with Gakpo grabbing his first Reds goal by turning home Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.

Everton coach Sean Dyche responded with a change for the final 30 minutes, as the young Ellis Simms made way for Demarai Gray in the attack.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp responded by throwing on the returning Diogo Jota for Nunez with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Everton had a chance to pull a goal back on 80 minutes when Alex Iwobi's cross to the far post found Tom Davies, who was unable to steer his header on target.

That proved to be the final clear-cut opening of the second half, as the Reds held on for their first win in five games while Everton remain in the relegation zone.
