The Citizens looked to silence the home crowd early on as Riyad Mahrez did well to offload the ball to Bernardo Silva who rattled the frame of the goal on five minutes.
Norwich were then denied by the woodwork in the 18th minute when Grant Hanley's powerful header crashed against the upright after getting on the end of Pierre Lees-Melou's corner. The breakthrough arrived in the 31st minute, with Raheem Sterling collecting a cross from Kyle Walker before sending a fine curling effort into the bottom corner.
Pep Guardiola's charges dominated the remainder of the first half, but were unable to fashion another clear chance while Hanley's header was the only chance for the hosts.
That changed seconds into the second half as City doubled their lead through Phil Foden, who squeezed home a shot from close range after Norwich failed to clear their lines.
It took a while, but the third goal arrived in the 70th minute when Sterling completed his brace after getting on the end of Ruben Dias' knockdown.
With City leading comfortably, Pep Guardiola was able to hand a debut to Brazilian starlet Kayky in the final six minutes while Liam Delap replaced Foden.
Sterling still had time to complete his hat-trick after City were awarded a penalty for Hanley's foul on Delap and while the winger had the penalty saved, he reacted quick enough to slot home the rebound.
