Venue: Anfield
The Reds brought back their regular line-up from the UEFA Champions League win over Porto, as Diogo Jota once again started in place of the injured Roberto Firmino, to join Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane upfront.
Jurgen Klopp's charges had the perfect start after Jota fired them ahead within the first two minutes with a close-range strike after a cross by Andrew Robertson.
Mane had a goal for Liverpool against his former side ten minutes later chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside but Jota eventually doubled their lead and got his brace in the 32nd minute with a tap-in after a square pass by Salah.
Southampton had their backs against the wall and Thiago Alcantara made it 3-0 for Klopp's charges eight minutes before the half-time break with deflected strike that wrong-footed goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, as the hosts were cruising at half-time.
The game continued to open up early in the second stanza as Virgil van Dijk made it 4-0 for Liverpool with a sweeping strike under the body of McCarthy after Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner found him unmarked inside the box.
Klopp kept the Saints on their toes on the hour-mark, as he brought on speedy attacker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in place of Alcantara and seven minutes later James Milner replaced Jordan Henderson for fresh legs in midfield.
Jota missed a big chance to complete his hat-trick 15 minutes before time as he miscued a tap-in from close but the job was already done, as Liverpool moved to within one point of leaders Chelsea who face Manchester United on Sunday.
