'Messi ISN'T Motivated By Money'
08 December, 2020
Former FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who's running for the positioning again, features suggested that Lionel Messi would not stay at the Spanish giants for money.
The Blaugrana's presidential elections are coming up in January, and one candidate making a lot of noise is anyone who has been in the positioning before, Laporta.
The Spaniard is likely to be a leading candidate, along with Victor Font, and is desperate for the club to hang on to its all-time top-rated goalscorer Lionel Messi, whose contract expires in June 2021.
Asked about how exactly Barcelona would package a new deal meant for the Argentine taking into consideration their current fiscal struggles, Laporta advised that it would not be money that makes the six-period Ballon d'Or winner need to stay in Spain.
"You need to be imaginative," he told Sport.
"Knowing Messi is not guided by money, and I assure you that is the case, we must produce a proposal that can convince him Barca includes a team with the capacity of winning the Champions Group.
"That is imperative. It really is what will be more priceless to Leo when selecting his future towards the end of the season. I am convinced of this.
"Leo and I have a romantic relationship of mutual affection. He recognizes that whenever I have built him a proposal, it's been fulfilled.
"Leo knows it and has explained personally he valued that very much. He should finish his career at Barca."
